Writing for Survivors

We were pleased to welcome so many local authors to festival this year and one in particular, Dr Helen Liebling had an incredible tale to tell. In this short blog she gives an insight in to her book and the reasons for writing it.

Nalule’s Travels and Adventures:

Writing for Survivors in Africa

An Autobiography by Dr Helen Liebling

“Dr Liebling has crafted an accomplished and enjoyable work that offers a captivating narrative of hardship, resilience, and triumph against the odds, told with passion and clarity by a woman who never gave up!”

K.C. Finn, Readers Favourite

Dr Liebling is a feminist, activist and researcher who acted against atrocities and abuses perpetrated on conflict survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and torture with the aim of improving survivors’ rights to international health, care, and justice.

Her early life of disruption and family separation led her to a passion for advocating for the rights of those who have survived human rights violations. Her first musical trip to Uganda in 1992 shaped her life and she developed a love for Africa, her people, traditional music, and travel.

Amongst other things, Helen’s incredible autobiography includes enchanting musical stories including wild dancing to 21-key xylophone music in rural Eastern Uganda (Busoga), a chicken on a bus and entertaining in the bars of Kampala. Her travels took her to a selection of the most beautiful places in the world including African deserts, mountains, and waterfalls.

Dr Liebling’s autobiography Nalule’s Travels and Adventures; Writing for Survivors in Africa was published by Aurora (Aurora House) in Australia in November 2023 and we were delighted that she was able to sell copies at the festival this year.
